Charger Safety Rules

1. SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS – This manual contains important safety and operating instructions for Bosch battery charger model GAL18V-160C. Do not substitute any other charger.
2. Before using battery charger, read all instructions and warning markings on (1) battery charger, (2) battery pack, and (3) product using battery.
3. To reduce the risk of injury, charge only Bosch rechargeable batteries listed on page 6. Other types of batteries may burst causing personal injury and damage.
4. Charge battery pack in temperatures above +32 degrees F (0 degrees C) and below +113 degrees F (45 degrees C). Store tool and battery pack in locations where temperatures will not exceed 120 degrees F (49 degrees C). This is important to prevent serious damage to the battery cells.
5. Do not recharge battery in damp or wet environment. Do not expose charger to rain or snow. Water entering battery charger may result in electric shock or fire.
6. Never submerge battery pack, tool or charger in fluid of any kind or allow fluid to enter them. Corrosive or conductive fluid (such as seawater or industrial chemical or bleach containing products, etc.) can cause short circuit which may result in fire, personal injury and property damage.
7. Battery leakage may occur under extreme usage or temperature conditions. Avoid contact with skin and eyes. The battery liquid is caustic and could cause chemical burns to tissues. If liquid comes in contact with skin, wash quickly with soap and water. If the liquid contacts your eyes, flush them with water for a minimum of 10 minutes and seek medical attention.
8. Place charger on flat nonflammable surfaces and away from flammable materials when recharging battery pack. Carpeting and other heat insulating surfaces block proper air circulation which may cause overheating of the charger and battery pack. If smoke or melting of the charger or battery pack is observed, unplug the charger immediately and do not use the battery pack or charger. Contact customer service immediately.
9. Make sure cord is located so that it will not be stepped on, tripped over, or otherwise subjected to damage or stress. Damaged plug and cord may result in electric shock or fire.
10. Disconnect the charger by pulling the plug rather than the cord. Do not operate charger with damaged cord or plug; have them replaced immediately. Damaged plug or cord may result in electric shock or fire.
11. Do not insert battery pack in charger if battery pack case is cracked. Using damaged battery pack may result in electric shock or fire.
12. Do not disassemble charger or operate the charger if it has received a sharp blow, been dropped or otherwise damaged in anyway. Incorrect reassembly or damage may result in electric shock or fire.
13. Before each use, check the battery charger, cable, plug and battery pack. Do not use if damage is detected. Never open the battery charger or battery pack yourself, take it to a Bosch Factory Service Center, or qualified serviceman only using original replacement parts. Incorrect reassembly or using damaged product may result in electric shock or fire.
14. Do not use attachments not recommended or sold by Bosch. Using attachments not recommended may result in electric shock or fire.
15. Do not store battery pack in charger. Battery pack stored in charger over a long period of time could lead to battery pack damage and fire.
16. Unplug charger from outlet before storage, attempting any maintenance or cleaning. Such preventive safety measures reduce the risk of electric shock or fire.
17. Keep the battery charger clean by wiping the charger housing with a damp cloth. Contamination may result in electric shock or fire.
18. Replace battery pack if a substantial drop in operating time per charge is observed. Battery pack may be nearing the end of its life.

Battery Care

⚠️WARNING When batteries are not in tool or charger, keep them away from metal objects. For example, to protect terminals from shorting DO NOT place batteries in a tool box or pocket with nails, screws, keys, etc. Fire or injury may result.
DO NOT PUT BATTERIES INTO FIRE or expose to high heat. They may explode.

Battery Disposal
⚠️WARNING Do not attempt to disassemble the battery or remove any component projecting from the battery terminals. Fire or injury may
result. Prior to disposal, protect exposed terminals with heavy insulating tape to prevent shorting.

LITHIUM-ION BATTERIES
If equipped with a lithium-ion battery, the battery must be collected, recycled or disposed of in an environmentally sound manner.

“The EPA certified RBRC Battery Recycling Seal on the lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery indicates Robert
Bosch Tool Corporation is voluntarily participating in an industry program to collect and recycle these batteries at the end of their useful life, when taken out of service in the United States or Canada. The RBRC program provides a convenient alterative to placing used Li-ion batteries into the trash or the municipal waste stream, which may be illegal in your area.

Please call 1-800-8-BATTERY for information on Li-ion battery recycling and disposal bans/restrictions in your area, or return your batteries to a Bosch Service Center for recycling. Robert Bosch Tool Corporation’s involvement in this program is part of our commitment to preserving our environment and conserving our natural resources.”

Charger Safety Rules

Extension Cords

⚠️WARNING AN EXTENSION CORD SHOULD NOT BE USED UNLESS ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY. Use of improper extension cord could result in risk of fire and electrical shock. If an extension cord is used, make sure:

1. The pins on plug of extension cord are the same number, size, and shape as those of plug on charger.
2. The extension cord is properly wired and in good electrical condition.
3. The wire size is large enough for AC ampere rating of charger as specified below:

4. An extension cord is a temporary solution. Move the charger to a standard receptacle as soon as the job has been completed.

Important Charging Notes

1. The charger was designed to fast charge the battery only when the battery temperature is between 32˚F (0˚C) and 113˚F (45˚C). If the battery pack is too hot or too cold, the charger will not begin charging the battery. (This may happen if the battery pack is hot from heavy use). Once the battery temperature returns to its safe charging temperature, between 32°F (0°C) and 113°F (45°C), the charger will automatically begin charging.
2. A substantial drop in operating time per charge may mean that the battery pack is nearing the end of its life and should be replaced.
3. Remember to unplug charger during storage period.
4. If battery does not charge properly:
   a. Check for voltage at outlet by plugging in some other electrical device. b. Check to see if outlet is connected to a light switch which turns power “off” when lights are turned off.
   c. Check battery pack terminals and charger connectors for dirt. Clean with cotton swab and alcohol if necessary.
   d. If you still do not get proper charging, take or send tool, battery pack and charger to your local Bosch Service Center. See “Tools, Electric” in the Yellow Pages for names and addresses.

Note: Use of chargers or battery packs not sold by Bosch will void the warranty.

Electronic Cell Protection (ECP)

The lithium ion battery is protected against deep discharging by the “Electronic Cell Protection (ECP)”. When the battery is empty, the tool is switched off by means of a protective circuit.
The battery is supplied partially charged. Completely charge the battery before using your cordless power tool for the first time. The lithium ion battery can be charged at any time, without reducing its service life. Interrupting the charging procedure does not damage the battery.

The wireless device is a radio transmitter and receiver. These limits are part of comprehensive guidelines and established permitted levels of RF energy for the general population. These guidelines are based on the safety standards previously set by international standard bodies. These standards include a substantial safety margin designed to assure the safety of all persons, regardless of age and health. This device and its antenna must not be colocated or operating in conjunction with any other antenna or transmitter.

1. The mobile terminal devices must be compatible with Bluetooth® Low Energy devices (version 4.2) and support theGeneric Access Profile (GAP).
2. The signal range may vary greatly depending on external conditions. The Bluetooth® range may be significantly weaker inside closed rooms and through metallic barriers (e.g.walls, shelving units, cases, etc.).

1. Compatible with “Power Boost” and advanced connectivity features.
2. 100% charge is only achieved in Standard mode. All batteries are limited to about 80% charge when “Power Boost” mode is active on charger or Max Lifetime mode is set in the app.

⚠️WARNING This charger will only charge the following batteries:

Bosch BAT600 – BAT650;
Bosch WCBAT612 – WCBAT625;
Bosch GBA18V000 – GBA18V999.

Assembly

GCY42 Connectivity Module Installation (sold separately)

⚠️WARNING To reduce the risk of injury read the operating instructions included with Bosch GCY42 connectivity module. Operating instructions for GCY42 connectivity module include important information not covered in this manual. If GCY42 connectivity module is not purchased with the charger, or if the replacement of the module or the battery becomes necessary, please follow this procedure (See Fig. 2):

– Using a flat screwdriver or a coin, remove the cover A from the top of the unit, by turning it 1/4 turn counterclockwise.
– If the charger is already equipped with the connectivity module, remove the battery B, but do not remove the connectivity module C.
– If the connectivity module is installed for the first time, remove the plastic placeholder D from the connectivity module compartment, and place the
connectivity module C in the compartment observing correct orientation. Note: Store the placeholder D in a safe place. Reinsert the placeholder again if the communications module is removed.
– Next place new battery B on the top of the connectivity module with the “+” polarity facing up.
– Place the cover A over the battery and turn it ¼-turn clockwise to lock using a flat screwdriver or a coin.

Wall mounting

⚠️WARNING Use mounting hardware which is appropriate for the wall type and suitable for the weight of charger and heaviest battery pack. If
the charger is installed without the correct hardware, the product may be unstable and cause property damage or personal injury.

Do not wall mount the charger where the weight of the charger and battery cannot be supported. If the strength of the wall mount location is not sufficient to support the charger and battery, the charger can fall off and cause an injury.

Check to be sure that there are no hidden live wires, water pipe, or gas pipe behind the mounting area. Cutting or drilling into any of these may cause serious injury or death.

Do not mount charger upside down or inverted. Improper mounting may cause property damage or personal injury. The charger can be mounted to a wall using wall mounting slots 8.

1. Locate suitable mounting area on the wall. See Fig. 3 for proper mounting orientation.
2. Mark two points on a vertical line 3-25/64″ (86mm) apart.
3. Select the appropriate screws and anchors (if necessary) for the material of the wall. (Mounting hardware not included.)
4. Drill into wall with appropriate drill bit. If anchors are to be used, follow anchor hardware manufacturer’s instructions.
5. Screw in two round-head screws (not included) with a diameter of 13/64″ (5mm) to maximum 1/4″ (6.5mm) into wall or anchors. Leave approximately 1/8″ (3.3 mm) space between bottom of screw head and wall.
6. Position the charger wall mounting slots over the mounting screws. Push charger towards the wall and slide it down to secure charger to mounting screws.

Note: Make sure the charger is securely mounted and that it is tight against the wall. Adjust screw exposure as necessary to ensure the charger is flat against the wall.

Connectivity

USING ‘BOSCH TOOLBOX’ APP
Pairing requires installation of connectivity module GCY42 (sold separately). After pairing your charger with a mobile device you can adjust certain functions or check the status of the charger using Bosch Toolbox app.

Changes made using the Bosch Toolbox app are confirmed on the charger by a flashing blue LED connectivity light.

1. Help button – tapping this button will bring up help screen.
2. Photo – tapping on the photo will let you customize the photograph of your product.
3. Battery charge status – the number of green ‘batteries’ indicates the estimated charge level for the battery pack.
4. Product nickname – tapping on the ‘pencil’ icon will let you customize the product nickname. You can also do it when changing the product photo.
5. Connection status bar – Here you can see the connection (signal) strength indicated by vertical bars. You can use the toggle switch to disconnect the charger from you mobile device.
6. Charging Modes adjustment slide – you can choose between three settings: ‘Max Lifetime’, Standard (middle), and “Power Boost”.
7. Storage – activates storage charging mode.
8. Charging Status – can be expanded (or collapsed) by tapping the down (or up) arrow to show the following:
   a. Type – displays battery type.
   b. Percent Full – displays battery charge level.
   c. Time Remaining* – displays time remaining for current charging mode.
   d. Battery Health* – displays battery condition: ‘Excellent’ (full performance), ‘Good’ (slightly reduced performance), and ‘Fair’ (replacement recommended).
   e. Last Charge* – indicates the date and time of the last charge of a battery previously charged on the connected charger. .
9. Charging Complete Tone – when enabled, the charger will sound a tone indicating that charging stage is complete.
10. Identify My Charger – Flashes the blue connectivity light on the charger
11. Factory Reset toggle switch – you can reset charger settings back to factory default settings.
12. Alerts – tapping the ‘alerts triangle’ will display any alerts received from the charger.
13. Info button – displays charger information and specifications.

* This feature is only available when using batteries with advanced connectivity features identified in table on page 6.

Operating Instructions

Charging Battery Pack

Plug charger cord into your standard power outlet. With no battery pack inserted, the bottom LED on the battery charging indicator 7 is continuously lit green. This indicates the charger is receiving power and the charger is ready for operation.

When you insert the battery pack into the charger 2. The charger’s green LED indicator light will begin to “BLINK”. Thanks to the intelligent charging process, the battery will be charged with optimal charge current depending on battery temperature, voltage and battery type. See chart on page 6 for approximate charging times with Standard charging mode and “Power Boost” charging mode.

The factory default charging mode is the Standard charging mode. “Power Boost” charging mode can be activated by pressing the “Power Boost” button or using Bosch ToolBox app. Once the “Power Boost” charging is completed, the charging mode will be switched back to the default charging mode automatically. The default charging mode can be changed using the connectivity module GCY-42 (sold separately) and Bosch ToolBox app.

SETTING THE DEFAULT CHARGING MODE
There are 3 modes controlled by a slider bar in the Bosch ToolBox app: Power Boost, Standard, and Max Lifetime. Additionally, Storage Mode can be selected using a toggle The active charging mode can be set for a single charging event or it can be set as a default for all charging cycles. If a single event type is set, the next time a battery is charged, it will revert back to the default. The app Charging Mode slider indicates the charging mode.

IDENTIFICATION OF CHARGING MODES

“POWER BOOST” MODE
The “Power Boost” function charges batteries up to around 50% battery capacity in rapid charging mode. This means batteries are ready for use sooner
than if charged using the Standard charging mode.

If the battery remains in the charger, it automatically keeps charging in Max Lifetime Mode up to around 80% battery capacity.

Rapid charging speeds vary for different battery types. Certain batteries are not capable of charging faster than the Standard charging mode. All batteries are limited to a maximum charge of around 80% with Power Boost mode active. See charging times and compatibilities in chart on page 6.

STANDARD CHARGING MODE
The battery is charged up to around 100% battery capacity. The Standard charging mode provides the best combination of fast charging time and full battery charge while optimizing the service life of the battery.

Standard mode is active as the Factory Default. It is also set as active for a single charging event after deactivating “Power Boost” mode using the Power Boost button.

MAX LIFETIME MODE
The battery is charged up to around 80% battery capacity. This mode charges the battery more slowly and thereby significantly prolonging its service life.
This mode can only be activated using the Bosch ToolBox app.

STORAGE MODE
The long-term storage mode is intended exclusively for extensive periods of storage (six months or more). The battery is charged up to only around 50% battery capacity so that it can be stored unused for a long time.
Note: Charger will not discharge a battery to 50% capacity for storage. Before long term storage a battery with over 50% battery capacity should be discharged in a tool to 50%.
This mode can only be activated using the Bosch ToolBox app.

BATTERY COOLING
(“ACTIVE AIR COOLING”)
The fan control unit integrated into the charger monitors the temperature of the inserted battery. As soon as the battery temperature is above approx. 32 °F (0 °C), the battery will be cooled by a fan.

“Power Boost” button

Pressing the “Power Boost” button 6 activates the “Power Boost” charging mode (rapid charging). The button can be pressed either before or after the battery has been inserted into the charger. The “Power Boost” button lights up red when the “Power Boost” charging mode (rapid charging) is enabled. Pressing on the “Power Boost” button again returns the charger to the Standard Charging Mode.

Once the rapid charge has finished (at around 50% battery capacity), the light on the “Power Boost” button will turn off and the battery will continue to charge up to around 80% battery capacity.

Only compatible batteries are able to rapid charge in “Power Boost” mode. See table on page 6 for approximate charging times with “Power Boost” mode.

Indicator Lights

CHARGING INDICATOR
In standby mode, the bottom LED on the battery charging indicator 7 is continuously lit green.

The five green LEDs indicate the battery’s state of charge during and after charging. Each continuously lit LED represents a battery capacity of approximately 20%.

Each flashing LED represents the maximum level of charge that will be achieved in the current charging mode. “Power Boost” mode (first 50%) three LEDs lit (continuous or flashing). Lifetime Mode and second stage of “Power Boost” mode

(50%-80%) four LEDs lit (continuous or flashing). Standard mode five LEDs lit (continuous or flashing).

ERROR INDICATOR

The continuous red light 5 indicates that the temperature of the battery is outside the permitted charging temperature range. The charging process begins as soon as the permitted temperature range has been reached.

The flashing red light 5 indicates that the battery or charger needs to be serviced.

CONNECTION STATUS INDICATOR

The flashing blue light 4 indicates that there is a connection to your mobile device and/or data transfer is in progress.

Audio signal

The audio signal can be switched on or off via the Bosch ToolBox app. When the audio signal is switched on, the charger emits a short tone once the specified charging cycle is complete. When the Bosch Toolbox app is used to restore the charger to factory settings a longer tone is emitted.

Restoring factory default settings

If the “Power Boost” button 6 is held down for five seconds, the charger is restored to factory default settings. The “Power Boost” button will flash and a long audio signal is emitted.
Factory default settings can also be restored using the Bosch Toolbox app.

Troubleshooting

Limited Warranty of Bosch Portable and Benchtop Power Tools

Robert Bosch Tool Corporation (“Seller”) warrants to the original purchaser only, that all BOSCH portable and benchtop power tools will be free from defects in material or workmanship for a period of one year from date of purchase. Seller’s sole obligation and your exclusive remedy under this Limited Warranty and, to the extent permitted by law, any warranty or condition implied by law, shall be the repair or replacement of parts, without charge, which are defective in material or workmanship and which have not been misused, carelessly handled, or misrepaired by persons other than Seller or Authorized Service Station. To make a claim under this Limited Warranty, you must return the complete portable or benchtop power tool product, transportation prepaid, to any BOSCH Factory Service Center or Authorized Service Station. For Authorized BOSCH Power Tool Service Stations, please refer to your phone directory.
